Calgary Zoo: Garden Photography Workshop
The Calgary Zoo is hosting a garden photography workshop in early August.
"A garden is a setting for what can be an intensely personal aesthetic and even spiritual experience, in fact this is the intended result of a well-designed garden. Can this be faithfully represented in an image? This is the goal of learning to see as a garden photographer."
Allan's course last summer was a big hit, so this year's program is expanded to allow for even more time for photo shoots and critique. In this workshop you will learn step-by-step how to see a garden. With an emphasis on composition and hands-on instruction in the field, you will put your new way of seeing into practice in the gardens of the Calgary Zoo, as well as a selection of public and private gardens.
This course assumes participants are comfortable with the operation of their camera. Please bring your camera (digital is preferred) and tripod to each of the photo shoots. Off-site visits will be discussed and details provided at the Friday evening lecture. Car-pooling may be an option.
Allan Mandell is an award-winning professional garden photographer whose images are published internationally in magazines and books. For a sample of his portfolio, visit www.gardenphotographer.com.

CIFP Event: Dave Montizambert – Lighting for Digital
As discussed in the January meeting, Patrick Kornak has Dave Montizambert coming to town on January 17th to talking about Lighting for Digital.
Dave Montizambert - Lighting for Digital
It is just two weeks before Dave Montizambert joins us on January 17th, 2009 in room 102 of the ICT building at the University of Calgary. His presentation goes from 7:00 - 10:00 pm. Tickets are $40 advanced and $50 at the door.
The power of Photoshop and instant digital image capture has made creating stronger images more possible than ever. However, even with these powerful digital tools there is still one weak link, lighting. Without good lighting at time of capture, one is in for a long bout of Photoshop trying to make a silk purse from a sow's ear. In this session, international lighting/Photoshop trainer Dave Montizambert will show you how to make the perfect marriage between digital and lighting.
You will learn how to:
Set up your digital system (camera & processing software) to optimize your lighting.
Create beautiful portrait lighting using only one light.
Create dramatic theatrical lighting for images with sizzle.
Shoot from the shadow side.
Get the most out of shooting RAW.
The knowledge contained in this workshop is designed to enable photographers to obtain stronger results in less time leaving more time for more important things such as creativity.
